Meadowbrook in the classroom

Life skills, told through story

Schools are asked to teach life skills, but most resources are worksheets. Meadowbrook teaches courage, honesty, teamwork, belonging and staying safe through picture-book adventures that students ask to read again.

Why it works

An adventure on the surface, a lesson underneath

Every Meadowbrook story has two layers. Students follow the adventure; the life skill does its work quietly underneath. No villains, no lectures: just ordinary creatures who make mistakes, get help, and find their way. Every book ends with a hopeful reflection on its final page, a natural place to stop and talk.

What readers seeWhat they absorb underneath
A burnt cake, a flooded path, a flat tyreFailure is a doorway, not a dead end
A race, a rescue, a construction projectPlanning, adapting and persisting build real confidence
A flood, a fire drill, an earthquake rumbleKnowing what to do turns fear into action
A missing invitation, a laughed-at questionBelonging and the courage to speak up can be learned
A trophy passed, a rival respectedCharacter in sport mirrors character in life

In the classroom

Four easy ways to use a Meadowbrook book

1

Read it together

Put the PDF on the class screen and read aloud. Each page holds one moment, so it’s easy to pause, point and talk about the pictures.

2

Stop and predict

The free preview ends with “What happens next?” Read the first pages, ask the class to predict, then read on to find out.

3

Talk about the inside story

Use the final reflection page to move from the adventure to the life skill: what did the character learn, and when have we felt like that?

4

Pair it with a drill

Read a Stay Safe book before a fire, flood or earthquake drill. Each one recaps the safety steps near the end, so students know what to do and why.

Discussion starters

Questions that work with any Meadowbrook book

No worksheet needed. These open up the inner journey in every story.

  • What did the main character want at the start?
  • What got in the way, and how did they feel about it?
  • Who helped them, and how?
  • What changed inside the character by the end?
  • Have you ever felt like they did? What happened?
  • What would you have done in their place?
